Let’s talk swimming.
Regular swim diapers are expensive. REALLY expensive. Do they really do all that much?
The answer is no.
A swim diaper’s job is to contain #2. That’s it. They aren’t meant to hold in pee. Any pee they catch eventually mingles with the pool water and washes away.
So, what are the options for cloth swim diapers?
You can go out and purchase cloth swim diapers. They generally cost less than regular cloth diapers. I, personally, have only used one (long before I started using regular cloth diapers). It is the One Step Ahead diaper called the Sun Smarties Diaper. It works fine for our purposes – mainly afternoons in the kiddie pool on the deck. It’s about to be worn by our third baby.
There are now so many cute options out there! Now that I have three who will need swim diapers, I am expanding my horizons! Swim diapers generally do not contain PUL or TPU waterproofing (which can break down with repeated pool chemical exposure).

If you are caught last minute with no dedicated swim diaper, you can use a pocket diaper without the insert in a pinch (or a hybrid diaper shell as long as it has some sort of lining to keep the PUL off of baby’s skin for comfort in the water). Choose a diaper that may not be a favorite. Chlorine can be hard on the PUL. Using the diaper a handful of times most likely won’t do a lot of damage, however, using it all summer could render it useless as a regular diaper. I have a few diapers set aside to be my summer swim diapers.
