As bloggers, we hear a lot about comment spam and how to prevent it. Blogger recently upgraded its spam prevention. WordPress has multiple plugins with Akismet being the most popular. So, why all the hubub? And what in the world are trolls?
Let’s take a walk through spam, trolls, and the options we have to protect our blogs.
Comment Spam
Spam is annoying. Just like in email accounts, spam can be a problem on blogs. It can be jibberish, off-topic, and make no sense like this:
Hi, i think that i noticed you visited my site thus i got here to return the choose?.I am trying to in finding issues to improve my site!I assume its ok to use a few of your ideas!! (on a web posting about an upcoming MOPS meeting on our MOPS website – NOTHING about web development!)
It can be an overt advertisement like this (I altered the website that was listed because there’s no way I’ll advertise a spammer’s site!):
Hi,Watch This FREE Video How To Build Over 100,000 backlinks and drove over 500,000 targeted visitors from free traffic source to your sites {removed website}Get Google Top Spot Now
Sometimes it’s a little harder to tell. The comment will have something to do with the post and makes sense, however, the point in posting the comment is for a back-link. As a way to boost their ranking in search engines. These sneaky spam comments are tricky. Always check the source and check any links included. If you have CommentLuv enabled, check that post. My guideline is that if it is a comment with a link that advertises something that I wouldn’t advertise myself. I have been getting repeated very good and relevant comments from one person, but the link has been to things like “hooking up with women” or “nude girls” or other inappropriate things. Just do some investigating!
Why is comment spam bad?
Besides comment spam being a pain in the rear, it can hurt your blog. Blogs that have a lot of published spam comments may get listed as spam blogs or will be ranked lower than the blog that weeds out the spam.
Comment Trolls
A troll isn’t someone who lives under a bridge. A troll is someone who posts things for the sole purpose of stirring up controversy. Trolls are commonplace in many online forums (though calling someone out as being a troll isn’t cool). Trolls can also be found in blog comments. They post something just to get a rise out of someone. They feed on drama.
I had my first troll comment just this past week. My first reaction was to jump in and defend myself. After reading things a couple more times, I realized this was a troll and by responding, I’d be giving this person just what he or she wanted.
The comment was in response to my post about forgiving like a child. The post was about my mommy-fail where I asked forgiveness from my children, which they happily gave. I hate to do it, but I’ll post the troll comment. I will not post any identifying information.
WOW! Iam impressed in how well read you are in the bible and how little you apply it. Yes, to be god like is to be child like, period. Stop your preaching and start walking your talk. Otherwise you are nothing more than a hipocrite. GOD IT.????
Goodness – just reading it again gets me all riled up! This person does not know me in real life and by just one blog post about a normal human failure, he attacks me like this. *shudder*
THAT, my friends, is a troll comment. Designed to stir up controversy and anger. When you come upon one like this, there is just one thing to do – DELETE! Do not feed the troll. If others have responded, post a comment explaining that you deleted a comment for being a personal attack.
What can I do?
There are several ways to deal with spam. It’s not hard and doesn’t take a ton of time.
- Comment message. You can set a message that appears above your comment form. Say what you like there. It’s a good idea to say something about your stance on attacks or other mean behavior – something simple like “play nice – attacks will not be tolerated and will be deleted” would suffice. This message won’t prevent spam or troll comments, but it will let your readers know what you will not allow. They will feel protected and will understand if you need to delete a comment in the future.
- Spam protection. Install a plugin if you are using WordPress. Try an alternative comment system if you are on Blogger and not happy with their improved spam protection.
- Delete button. There is nothing wrong with deleting a comment from time to time. It is your blog. Keep it a safe place for people to be. Make it clear to your readers what is ok and what isn’t. Protect yourself and your readers. However, if you delete a lot of comments, readers may be less likely to comment for fear of being deleted. Trust may be eroded – some companies have seen their trust plummet after deleting dissenting opinions from their websites on a regular basis.
- Comment moderation. Some bloggers opt to use comment moderation. Comments are not public until the blogger approves them. I don’t recommend using moderation all the time. It is fine if you use it for a time – especially if spam or troll comments have gotten out of hand or if you are concerned about a particularly hot topic post. Readers like instant gratification – the ability to see their comment as well as others right away. Readers can better engage in discussions. The sense of community on your blog increases when comment moderation is not used. If you use moderation, be sure to check your spam folder regularly. For some reasons, one of my favorite bloggers (Donna Perugini) always gets sent to spam. No idea why!
- Captcha. Many bloggers are so afraid of spam that they jump to using captcha right away. Captcha is the comment verification system that requires you to enter random and hard-to-read letters and numbers. I hate captcha. I can never get it right. I often give up and don’t comment because of the captcha. Sometimes, I’ll comment, hit enter, then start to a different web page only to see right as the screen changes that there was capcha after submitting and now it’s too late. My comment was lost. There are better ways to manage spam than giving readers a headache with captcha. Definitely do not use BOTH comment moderation and captcha. There is no reason to use both together.
Remember, your blog is exactly that. YOURS. You are in charge of your content including the content in your comments. Take control. Protect your blog. Protect your reputation. Protect your readers.
How do you handle spam and trolls? What’s the worst comment you have ever received?

A lot of blog 'gurus' even suggest you leave the 'rancid' comments on your blog just to encourage debate. I personally don't see 'troll-like activity' as adding value to the conversation at all.
I was copying my comments for awhile every time I left a comment and it went to captcha fulfilling. Many a well thought out comment of mine have been lost too and it's a matter of not having enough time to redo the comment. I've had to use the hearing captcha since the 'read the dumb letters' one kept rejecting me.
Yes, those spammers are very tricky lately. The comments sound believeable until you check on their site and it has someone elses name on it. You're looking for Kari and it seems only Steve is placing all kinds of weird content on his site. I go through all my spam because even my Akismet has spammed some valuable comments….not so many lately though.
Yeah – I've heard to allow the rancid comments. I even read that some bloggers have friends intentionally leave firey comments. No thanks! Not for this chickie!

I haven't had a troll comment yet, but some of my favorite blogs have. Your advice, "Don't feed the troll!" by responding to their comment, is really true. They just want drama! Thanks for using your unpleasant experience as a teaching moment for all of us!

Spammers are a true annoyance to any blogger. I make sure that my permissions are set so the first comment made by someone is always moderated by me. I also have GASP installed, which has proved to me excellent when it comes to fighting against spammers. There is this one person that comments frequently on my blog that I'm not sure if they're a troll or just clueless.
Sometimes their posts make sense, other times I have no idea what they're talking about. I've had to delete some of their posts because they're basically gibberish. I've even put them on mod queue so every post they make goes through me first. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with this person quite yet, but I think I have somewhat of a good handle on things.
Great post, very informative!

Ahhh the trolls. My first issue with your troll was their spelling. That irritates me to no end, it is hard to have a fight of wits when the other person comes unarmed. I have had a few trolls and I knew where they came from. Except they forgot I don't back down and I will call you out and embarrass you to no end for being a troll. Usually by fire vlogging, that got them to quit every time because they knew I had their number.
I use comment moderation AND Askimet for this exact reason. Trolls like that do not need the attention. I first experienced trolls when I wrote about Trayvon Martin. I was open to a good discussion but not to people who simply wanted to spew hate. I wound up deleting a couple people.
I am so sorry you had to be put through the troll test with that nasty comment!

I just don't get people who just spew hate. That must be an awful and joy-less way to live.
I'm finding that spam comments are getting harder and harder to identify. But, as you said, they can be identified if you just pay attention. It's usually the links that are the red flag. I hate captcha. I never get it right the first time. I moderate first time comments, so that I can flag spammers and regular commenters don't have to go through moderation every time. Thanks for the tips!
Wow, I've been blogging for a while, but never heard of the term troll. Thanks for informing me.

I have just learned about Trolls and since I would never think to be mean to strangers I just learned that some people are. This is a great and informative blog post! Thanks!

Thanks so much for the great information. Fortunately, I've figured most of these out for myself over a few years of blogging. I now use comment moderation all the time because of some extremely nasty comments I was getting. Bloggers should realize that Captcha is extremely difficult for people who have vision problems. I hate it and I only have the usual problems focusing that come with age.
I had a troll that not only attacked me and anyone commenting, but then sent his followers. It was UGLY! I found the WP-Ban plugin to ban IP addresses. When I receive spam or hateful comments, I simply ban their IP address.
Some spam IP addresses in the Phillipines attempt hundreds of times to come back to my site. Sadly, my troll was persistent by hiring an IP address service to spread his hatefulness. I finally contacted Maine's computer crimes division and he hasnt come back.
Oh my goodness! That's horrible! I'm glad it finally stopped. Why do people have to be so mean?Audra Michelle Writer, Rediscovering Domesticityhttp://rediscoveringdomesticity.com/Want a signature like mine? Click here.

I give Captcha one try and then just move on. I hate it when I lose a comment I've really thought about, but I can't always understand those things. So far, no trolls for me! Yay!

A lady called me hypocrite because I posted a blog on talking dirty especially before children. She said I was one of those critical and judgemental Christians. I really wish I had read this before then, I would have simply deleted the comment. Any way, I am wiser now, thanks to you.
Have a super blessed day!

My recent post Sunday Squabble: Why I love that Man!
So very sad to hear about your troll
I had one a while ago, too, who said it seemed as though I rely on men to feel better about myself… which was not only completely ridiculous (I was single for two years before I met my now-boyfriend) but it was hurtful, as my blog has been about my journey to discover myself again and find true happiness. You'll never make everyone happy, but I just don't understand why people feel compelled to leave hurtful things on websites. "If you don't have anything nice to say…" doesn't always seem to apply in cyberspace.
Some spammer left 58 comments overnight on Saturday. Talk about clogging my inbox. Blogger has been automatically identifying them as spam so they don't publish, but I still get the emails, which is somewhat annoying. I don't carefully read the comments, but they are pretty laughable how nonsensical they are.

I dislike Captcha too.
I also find you can tell what are troll comments by the bad grammar and the spacing. I've had a few like yours, but noticed the little "i" for I place the lack of spacing.
It still felt awful being "chastised", but then I realized they weren't "real".
Thanks for a great post.

Great post! I just wrote a post about Word Verification and the overwhelming response was an astounding NO!
My recent post Who Are You? Share Your About Me…
As annoying as it is, I prefer using comment moderation and captcha together. My moderation is set up so that your comment is posted once you've already posted and been approved one time but the comment spam just gets out of hand and I would rather it be nipped in the bud than go through all my blog posts and delete them all individually. The thing that REALLY irritates me is the blogger blogs that have moderation, captcha activated AND force people to sign in with google accounts or etc. Name/URL should ALWAYS be an option, specifically for those who do not have blogger blogs. I don't want to make potential readers jump through hoops to get to my blog, particularly if I've taken the time to leave a thoughtful comment on your blog that might draw attention to my own. At this moment, I have a blogger blog which is just a place holder for my self-hosted blog. But to get to that, they have to click on my name, then they have to click on the link from the blogger dashboard, THEN they have to click on the link left on my place-holder and then, if they're not completely p'ed off, they get to read my blog.
Dealing with trolls is another matter. They are usually personal attacks against me. I have no problem with people disagreeing with me or not liking what I have to say but when insults are flung at me, I just delete it. Or I poke fun at them in public. I have one troll who is a regular reader whom I like responding to because whilst they are pretty vitriolic, their comments are thought provoking.
My recent post Oh How Pinteresting, August 29, 2012 – MAKEUPMAKEUPMAKEUP
A very helpful post! I like using moderation because it gives me control over the comments like the past weekend, I had to weed out 72 spams! Time consuming but worth it. I have no idea what is a troll until now. Good to know what to do when that happens, hopefully not.

I don't delete trolls' comments; I feel like it sends a message that it bothered me. I just ignore 'em. Don't feed the trolls.
For a while, I thought about getting rid of CommentLuv because it was attracting so many of those spammy website URLs. It took me a while to catch on because, like you said, sometimes the comments are pretty relevant and you don't realize anything's off unless you look at the URL. I used to delete the entire comment, but now I just remove the CommentLuv (unless it's a completely irrelevant comment, in which case they get my itchy delete finger).
Akismet is my best friend. I still try to regularly check comments for garbage, though (and so that I can reply to the good ones).
My recent post Letting Help In
Awesome Post! (and I see you are using Intense Debate – SNAP!)
The worst comment I ever got was so mean and uncalled for that it really ruined my day.
I had done a harmless little how-to post about making "Indian" feather headbands/headdress for a Peter Pan Party and the comment said my photos were the worst they'd ever seen on the internet and I should educate myself.
I spammed the comment but couldn't get it out of my head. So I ended up unspamming the comment and then writing a reply.
Rightly or wrongly.
I first of all thought they were attacking my photography skills, but a reader suggested perhaps I had stepped on some kind of cultural toes with the "indian" thing. Who knew? I am a new Zealander! I didn't know "Red Indians" could be such a sensitive topic especially when it came to peter Pan!
In the end I wrote a disclaimer on the end of the post about my possible lack of cultural sensitivy. Most readers were very supportive but one suggested changing The Red Indians in my Peter Pan party to Amazons??? Cultural sensitivity and PC gone mad. I like Peter Pan just the way it is.
In the end, a storm in a teacup – but it's crazy how we can stir up controversy so easily with some people, even with the most benign of posts!
Trolls. Yep, it's a good name for them.
I agree – being PC has gone a bit over the top. I was just working on a post and went round and round about how to word something dealing with a traditionally hispanic name. It feels like we need to have disclaimers every 2 sentences sometimes! Thanks for visiting!
I hate Captcha too. I have it on my blog (Blogger) and I just wrote a post about it the other day. I took it off and one day later, I had comment spam. I will check out your alternate comment system link!
My recent post Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto.
I'm wondering if fellow bloggers get comments that seem legit but from the admin side it looks very spammy. The comment will address the content of the post but the web address is invalid and the e-mail address is almost always something weird. If anyone does, please let me know and put my curiosity (and perhaps mild paranoia) to rest.
On another note, CAPTCHA is something I despise and more often than not I will avoid commenting if I see a blogger using it. CAPTCHA and comment moderation? I won't return to the blog. If you're that paranoid you should not be blogging. Just my two cents.
Kim, I get comments like that all the time. I can usually tell by the links. I thought I was going crazy for awhile since the comments seemed to be on topic.
Really helpful post. Thank you so much for the information. Love your blog. Love Jesus too. Love the prayer request button on the side. If I imitate it, not the button, but the idea, would you be upset?
Thanks for stopping by. PLEASE feel free to imitate the prayer button! We all need as much prayer as we can get! I've found it to be a fantastic tool for connecting with readers and have heard some awesome testimonies of answered prayer!

Great post! I had a comment recently that I was not quite sure if they were a troll or not – seemed like they were trying to stir the pot. I responded politely and happened to have more info on the topic in question and it did not go any further. I was thankful that so far no one has jumped on the bandwagon of the potential troll.
I do use Akismet and have had great success in blocking spammers.
